Phuket Town

Here are some recent reviews of Phuket town.

“Really enjoyed the evening”

We had great fun visiting Phuket town on a Sunday evening. The weekend market is really really good- lots of street food, fruits, juices and of course fake designer stuff. The prices were really competitive. Very good atmosphere and good fun. We then went to the town and had a lovely italian meal. Some very good restaurants in the town centre. make sure you have a good driver/ guide. Definitely recommend a visit to Phuket Town on a weekend.

“One of the best days in Phuket is simply exploring this town…”

Phuket Town has everything. There is Old Phuket, with its old beautiful buildings and arty streets and shops. Markets bustling with fresh fruits, vegetables, and everything else under the sun. Plenty of great shopping opportunities. Amazing photography opportunities. Yummy restaraunts and cafes at every corner. Art galleries…. It’s all here and really easily accessible!
My boyfriend and I stayed in Karon, and took a local bus into Phuket Town. Do not be fooled when the Tuk Tuk drivers try to tell you “there nothing to see in Phuket Town. I take you to Big Buddah ra ra ra…” There is SO much to see, even if you just spend the day wondering throughout the little streets and alleyways, through the markets and food vendor stalls, into shops and little corner markets, into galleries or back alley ways… Enjoy the foods, the sights, the old buildings and the smells. Spend as little, or as much as you like. Its really something refreshing, compared to the craziness of say, Patong’s Bangla Road…

Weekend Market in Phuket

Make sure you go to the night market at Phuket Town on Saturday night, The market opens at 5pm and goes till 10pm – although we only stayed till about 8.30. We walked for miles up and down the alleyways of stalls. Great for shopping for all clothes, shoes, accessories etc, but make sure you bargain hard and you will pick up some great bargains! A good example is T-shirts with name brands like Diesel, Billabong, Hurley etc for 200 baht. I also really enjoyed the food – great honey garlic chicken nibbles for 10 baht each and sushi for 5 baht per piece!!!

Villa Sanyanga is amazing!

We just had 9 people stay in Villa Sanyanga for 6 nights and it was WAY too short. Luxury does not do it justice, and sitting back in the infinity pool overlooking the sunset on the Andaman Sea is a must-do activity. Tongpoon our driver, ever so gracious and kindpicked us up from the airport and drove us around the island during our holiday, and Lily, , the villa manager and chef looked after us and fed us the most fantastic food and of course Nang and Mon doing the unbearable task of cleaning up after us, will be ever appreciated. If you can, take the 70″ catamaran out. A simply amazing vessel! I cannot recommend this place enough, we will be returning annually!

Latest Review 31 Oct 2011

Hi Jacquie,

We had the most amazing holiday ever.

OMG the Villa and staff were amazing; we love Lilly, Tongpoon, Nang and Mon. They were unbelievable and made us feel right at home. You have return guests in our group. We are even thinking next time to swap one of the Villa nights to be on the Yacht

The photos on your website are really nice, but the updated look and feel of all the bedrooms etc gives the Villa much better justice. I might even send you some of our photos they look really amazing

Lilly cooked us some of the most beautiful Thai food we have ever had, she did whatever we needed and never failed. No wonder why you have had her on board for so many years. She gave us a cooking lesson on our final night and offered to email us some recipes  (any chance you could send me her email address?)

We arranged to use the Yacht for Stevens’ birthday it so much better than we anticipated and was really good to meet Richard.

Thankyou again.

John

PHUKET HOLIDAY GUIDE

This is an interesting and informative site, giving details of weather in each month, showing the best times to visit Phuket for your villa holiday with pros and cons of each month and season.

http://www.phuket-holiday-guide.com/best_time_to_vist_phuket.html

PHUKET

As with choosing where to stay in Phuket, choosing the best time to visit Phuket depends on personal preferences and budget.

Phuket is an all year round holiday destination but there is a “dry season” where the consistently fine weather draws by far the largest number of tourists.

However, good weather is possible at any time of year and visiting Phuket during the less busy months can still provide a lovely tropical holiday but for a lot less money than going in the high season. Air fares are much lower and, with “discount-wars” occurring among the Phuket resorts, its possible to get even the most luxurious accommodation at less than half the high season price.

Which time of year is best for you to visit Phuket? The following describes some positive and negative aspects of each month along with detailed weather statistics, to help you decide.

Phuket in January (High Season)

The most popular month with tourists. Rainfall is very low with most days bringing clear blue skies and low humidity.

The Good :

  • Lots of sunshine likely.
  • Calm seas ideal for swimming at the beach and scuba diving or launch trips.
  • Nightlife has a good party atmosphere.
  • Chinese New Year celebrations for 2012 (Year of the Dragon starts on the 23rd). Thai chinese usually celebrate with fireworks and colourful festival events.

The Not So Good :

  • Roads in the towns are busy.
  • Highest prices for travel, accommodation and shopping.
  • Patong in particular can get very crowded but for those who want more peaceful surroundings there are plenty of quieter areas to stay in such as Kata and Surin or the tranquil Laguna Lakes.

The Good :

  • Sunshine on most days with relatively low humidity.
  • Calm sea conditions suited for swimming, diving and launch trips
  • Busy nightlife scene.
  • Chinese New Year for 2013 (Year of the Snake starts on the 10th) . Celebrations usually include impressive fireworks displays.

The Not So Good :

  • High prices for travel, accommodation and shopping.

Phuket in March (High Season)

The average temperatures creep up slightly as the hottest time of year approaches with sunny days still being the norm. The high season crowds drop off slightly and some hotels and villas start offering reduced rates. A good month to consider.

The Good :

  • Low rainfall and mostly hot sunny days.
  • Sea conditions are good for swimming, diving and launch trips.
  • Plenty of nighttime entertainment and daytime shopping with slightly smaller crowds than January and February
  • Accommodation prices tend to be lower than January and February.

Phuket in April (High Season Ends)

The  hottest time of year and also the month of the Songkran water festival which celebrates the start of the Thai new year and involves everyone enthusiastically dousing each other with water. For visitors who enter into the spirit of things it can be an amazingly fun experience though others, hoping for rest and relaxation, may find it a great inconvenience as its almost impossible to go outside without getting drenched if you stay in the towns.

Many people flock to Phuket specifically to join in the celebrations which means once again that early bookings for both flights and hotels are advisable. The water-throwing celebrations in Phuket usually last for seven days.

April usually produces the highest average temperatures but there is also an increased chance of rainfall especially towards the end of the month.

The Good :

  • Good chance of many sunny days.
  • The last month of usually stable sea conditions. Visibility for diving tends to deteriorate in the following months.
  • Songkran (official days are 13th – 15th) attracts many visitors. The bars in Patong do huge business during the water festival days which usually lasts for seven days.

The Not So Good :

  • The road accident rate during Songkran is high.
  • Hottest time of the year.

May Weather Statistics

Phuket in May (Low Season Start)

Although the average temperature drops slightly its offset by a rise in humidity. Rainfall increases dramatically making May one of the wettest times of year though decent periods of sunshine can occur between the often short showers. Fair weather is more likely in the early part of the month as the rainy season has been known to arrive “late”.

The Good :

  • The high season crowds disappear creating a more relaxing atmosphere in the towns and on the main beaches.
  • Still plenty of nightlife fun though many bars are quiet.
  • Even if it rains its still warm and its still possible to strike calm sunny days.

The Not So Good :

  • One of the wettest months of the year.
  • Overall humidity is high throughout the day and evening.
  • Sea conditions deteriorate and are less suitable for launch trips or scuba diving.

Av. Relative Humidity Evening 74 %
Av. Rainfall 21.34 cm
Highest Recorded Rainfall 36.32 cm
Lowest Recorded Rainfall 10.92 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 5 hrs

Phuket in June (Low Season)

June gets regular periods of rain but usually a lot less than the wettest months of the low season.

A good chance of some dry fine periods together with the low season prices make this one of the best low season months to consider visiting Phuket.

The Good :

  • Cheaper flights to Thailand.
  • A good chance of sunshine.
  • Crowds are gone and towns such as Patong become almost peaceful.
  • Still plenty of nightlife fun but many bars are quiet. Often you will get much friendlier service as bars and restaurants try harder to encourage you to return.

The Not So Good :

  • Its likely to rain on many days though usually in short-lived thunderstorms.
  • Sea state can be bad for launch trips or scuba diving

July Weather Statistics

Phuket in July (Low Season)

July has similar weather to June but slightly more rain on average. Luck with the weather is needed but, with sunny days still being quite common and prices for accommodation being very low, July is one of the better months in the rainy season to consider.

Pros :

  • Cheap flights to Thailand and plenty of discounts on Phuket hotels.
  • Towns and beaches are not crowded.
  • Still some fun nightlife but quiet compared to the high season. Note : some people prefer this.
  • Even if it rains its still warm and its still possible to strike calm sunny days.

Cons :

  • Rain is quite common.
  • Sea state can be bad for launch trips or scuba diving

August Weather Statistics
Av. Temperature High 30° C.
Av. Temperature Low 26° C.

Av. Relative Humidity Evening 74 %
Av. Rainfall 26.16 cm
Highest Recorded Rainfall 62.48 cm
Lowest Recorded Rainfall 7.11 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 6 hrs

Phuket in August (Low Season)

Along with June and July this is also a good rainy season month to consider visiting Phuket. Rainfall often comes in short intense bursts punctuated with periods of sunshine.

A fair chance of sunny weather between showers, low season prices and smaller numbers of tourists can make August a pleasant time to be there.

Air fares and accommodation prices generally reach rock bottom from August to October as airlines and hotels compete aggressively to fill inventories. Many regular visitors are prepared to take their chances with the weather in order to save sometimes more than 50% on their trip.

Pros :

  • Low season prices on flights available..
  • Towns and beaches are uncrowded..
  • Nightlife more relaxed.
  • Still a good chance of sunny days.

Cons :

  • Quite a few periods of rain.

Av. Relative Humidity Evening 78 %
Av. Rainfall 41.91 cm

Lowest Recorded Rainfall 18.03 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 5 hrs

Phuket in September (Low Season)

Being usually the wettest month of the year with high humidity makes it hard to recommend visiting Phuket at this time. However, one benefit is that there will be very few other tourists about which often means that you get extra attention from Phuket’s business owners.

The Good :

  • Cheapest flights and hotel deals.
  • Low numbers of other tourists can lead to more friendly service.
  • Roads are relatively quiet in townships.
  • Even when it rains its still warm and sunny days are still possible.
  • There are still some busy nighttime venues and many bars have drinks specials to attract custom.

The Not So Good :

  • Hot and humid.
  • Statistically the wettest month of the year.
  • Not a good time to plan launch trips or scuba diving. Tropical rainstorms can brew very quickly !
October Weather Statistics
Av. Temperature High 30° C.
Av. Temperature Low 24° C.

Av. Relative Humidity Evening 76 %
Av. Rainfall 30.48 cm
Highest Recorded Rainfall 47.24 cm
Lowest Recorded Rainfall 16.76 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 6 hrs

Phuket in October (Low Season Ends)

Another fairly wet month but usually a big improvement over September. Prices and tourist numbers remain very low which along with improving weather as the rainy season approaches its end make October another good month to think about visiting.

The Good :

  • Flights typically stay very low.
  • Weather can start to improve especially toward the end of the month.

The Not So Good :

  • Its likely to rain on many days.
  • High humidity.
  • Sea condition generally not good for launch trips or scuba diving.
November Weather Statistics
Av. Temperature High 30° C.
Av. Temperature Low 24° C.

Av. Relative Humidity Evening 72 %
Av. Rainfall 20.83 cm
Highest Recorded Rainfall 41.66 cm
Lowest Recorded Rainfall 20.83 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 7 hrs

Phuket in November (High Season Starts)

Although November is usually considered the start of the high season it should be noted that rainfall is still quite high as the rainy season tails off. For those heading there at this time of year it might be a better bet to choose the latter part of the month.

Tourist numbers start to increase with a good chance of nice weather without the overcrowding November is a good month to consider visiting.

The Good :

  • Although tourist numbers start to increase the towns are not crowded.
  • Nightlife atmosphere improves as bars start to pick up more business. Many of the staff that left Phuket for the low months return to work.
  • A good chance of sunshine especially towards the end of the month.
  • Sea conditions improve and the the “unofficial” scuba diving season starts.
  • Loy Krathong festival usually occurs in November (Thai calendar 12th lunar month full moon). Hundreds of hot air lanterns (khom loi) are released and can be seen floating out to sea.

The Not So Good :

  • It can still rain quite a lot especially early in the month.

December Weather Statistics
Av. Temperature High 31° C.
Av. Temperature Low 23° C.
Av. Relative Humidity Morning 89 %
Av. Relative Humidity Evening 63 %
Av. Rainfall 5.08 cm
Highest Recorded Rainfall 13.21 cm
Lowest Recorded Rainfall 5.08 cm
Av. Daily Sunshine 8 hrs

Phuket in December (High Season)

The rainy season should be over by December and if rain does fall it will usually be as short and relatively light showers.

Crowds start to steadily increase as New Year’s Eve approaches but are still lower than the peak months to come. High season prices are generally in full swing.

The Good :

  • Towns are busy but generally not too crowded.
  • Nightlife is in full swing with a fun party atmosphere.
  • Weather is usually very good with lots of sunny days
  • Although a predominantly buddhist country, Thailand still celebrates Christmas at least in a commercial sense. In tourist towns all the usual decorations, traditional turkey dinners and parties are to be found.
  • New Years Eve is celebrated enthusiastically around the nightlife areas with fabulous fireworks displays over Patong Beach.

The Not So Good :

  • Not many discounts on flights and hotels.

SURIN LIFE

Surin Beach Phuket is a popular destination for the rich and famous and is located North of Laem Singh Beach and South of Pansea Beach on the West Coast of Phuket. With crystal clear water and beautiful white sand that stretches for almost a kilometer, and the spectacular views, are what makes Surin Beach a popular travel destination, and one of the best beaches in Thailand not only for tourists but also for many local Thai’s and expatriates as well.

Surin Beach is surrounded by an array of day and night quality shopping and food and beverage venues that offer a variety of entertainment, plus its central location on the West Coast of the island of Phuket, makes Surin Beach an ideal location to venture out from to take in one or more of the popular attractions Phuket is famous for.

pastedGraphic.pdf

Shopping

Surin is notable for its quite low key shopping and there are some interesting places to stop in the area. Start at the up market shopping mall, the Surin Plaza, located just before you reach Surin Beach from Cherng Talay. Then there are some nice shop-houses with good quality items near the beach itself. Other fun and more adventurous shopping is at the local weekend market in villages nearby Surin Beach

pastedGraphic_1.pdf

Nightlife

Don’t expect a Patong nightlife ambience in Surin. It’s a more tasteful, laid back experience and all the better for it. Surin nightlife changes with the seasons. From November to May party life buzzes along the beach and further inland. For the rest of the year, however, the area’s nocturnal activities are pretty much confined to restaurants and bars.

Sorry, there are no last-minute offers at present. We use these to fill gaps in the rentals at the last minute, but the villa is now heavily booked most of the year, and especially in June, July and August.

Latest Review for Villa Sanyanga, Phuket

Copied from Trip Advisor website

Clinton Sydney
Review Submitted: May 2, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
After many hours of careful online research of Phuket villa properties my group (consisting of eleven 30+ year-olds) decided to choose Villa Sanyanga for our 5 day holiday accomodation. Jacquie was very helpful with her prompt booking communications & guest reviews via email / skype and organising payment via Paypal.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with refreshing cold towels, cut fresh fruit and cold beverages by Lily & her staff. This set the tone for the exceptional service for the rest of our stay. Lily was most accomodating in helping us plan our trip itenary with Tongpoon to the Big Buddha, Phuket Town, Patong Beach, local tailors, spas, elephant rides, shopping malls, beachside Surin Beach restaurant (PLA) and booking local massuses to come to the villa and a private boat charter to Phi Phi island.

Foodwise Lily and her team were able to cater to all our specific requests as lovers of great Thai food. Ladna, papaya som tham, chicken larb, satay, fried pipis, boat duck noodles, kuieh tiew noodle soup, gai yang bbq chicken, steamed crabs, yum moon sian, thai banana fritters, mango salad were amongst the many dishes she was able to purchase ingredients for and cook up with little hassle. She also managed to find durian & mangostein fruits at the local markets for us and bake a deliciously yummy carrot cake to celebrate one of our friend’s birthdays! *drool*

Needless to say we were ALL (even the fussy ones with high standards!) extremely impressed with the wonderful service provided by our host Lily, driver Tongpoon and staff. The villa layout fitted our group (5 couples and 1 single) perfectly with the online photos even better in reality. The infinity edge pool and views of Surin Beach were breath-taking!

Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Villa Sanyanga to any of my friends or family looking for a relaxing Phuket getaway or action packed holiday or something in between. Lily and her team were amazing! You won’t want to leave!

Weather in Phuket

Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It’s warm all year ’round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The September-October period is also the wettest.

Best Time to Go to Phuket

The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool NE monsoon season, from December through March when it isn’t so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75F to 89F (24C to 32C). Note that lately, as almost everywhere in the world, weather is unpredictable.

Hottest Time in Phuket

The hottest time is from April through May (see photo galleries: April in Phuket) , with temperatures ranging from 80F to 95F (27C to 36C). There are frequent short heavy thundery showers, offering welcome relief from the temperature and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs (Songkran Festival) on April 13th and everyone sprinkles (or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder!

Locals enjoy June, July and August (see photo galleries: June and August in Phuket) since the weather is usually fine and our favourite haunts remain uncrowded. The usual pattern is brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Everything is a little less expensive at this time of year, as well. Temperatures range between 70F and 90F (20C to 33C).

Low Season

During September and early October we locals start to remember our umbrellas. This makes an ideal time to visit abroad. One consolation for those who remain is that the beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets are relatively uncluttered by visitors. And even at this time, we still get long intervals of sunshine between the heavy showers.

Anyway, plenty of low season activities, both water- and land-based, still offer themselves on Phuket during this wettest part of the summer season. Read more…
